Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 2026 ยท Plain English, no surprises.
The short version: SmithNet doesn't store your queries, doesn't track you personally, and doesn't sell data. When you look something up, your browser fetches the result directly from third-party APIs โ nothing passes through our servers.
What We Collect
Almost nothing. Here's the full list:
- Nothing you look up โ your IP lookups, DNS queries, domain searches, and MAC lookups are made directly from your browser to third-party APIs. SmithNet's servers never see the query.
- Basic traffic analytics โ Cloudflare provides aggregate statistics (page views, bandwidth, country-level geography). No individual user tracking, no cookies.
- Email address โ only if you voluntarily sign up for the API waitlist or contact us. Used only to respond to you.
Third-Party APIs
The tools on smithnet.dev call these external services directly from your browser. Their privacy policies apply to those requests:
- ipinfo.io โ IP geolocation (primary source)
- ipapi.co โ IP geolocation (fallback)
- HackerTarget โ Ping, traceroute, SSL checks
- crt.sh (DigiCert) โ SSL certificate transparency logs
- rdap.org / rdap.iana.org โ WHOIS/RDAP domain data
- maclookup.app / macvendors.com โ MAC address vendor lookup
- Google DNS over HTTPS โ DNS record lookups
These services may log your IP address as part of the request. We don't control what they log.
Cookies
SmithNet does not set any tracking or advertising cookies. Cloudflare may set a technical security cookie (__cf_bm) for bot protection โ this expires in 30 minutes and contains no personal information.
Advertising
There are no ads on SmithNet. No ad networks. No affiliate tracking. No sponsored results.
Data Retention
We don't store your queries, so there's nothing to retain or delete. If you've emailed us, we retain that correspondence as long as it's useful for context.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes, we'll update the "last updated" date at the top. The policy lives at smithnet.dev/privacy.html.
